Fatwa CenterPouring Zamzam water in drains of Al-Masjid Al-Haraam
Question
Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuhu, Shaykh. There are drains in Al-Masjid Al-Haraam and its outer courtyard. Is it permissible to pour Zamzam water in those drains or not? What about the Zamzam water that goes down the drain while filling the container? Also, sometimes the taste of Zamzam water in the end of bottle changes, so I wash it with some Zamzam water and pour it in Al-Masjid Al-Haraam in those drains, is that ok? I know the ruling about pouring Zamzam water in normal drains, but what about these? What about the Zamzam containers/coolers that they have in the Masjid; what if one pours Zamzam water in that container base? Then again, the worker probably goes and pours all of it in those drains. Allaah, The Exalted, knows best. Please advise, Shaykh. May Allaah reward you.
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad 
is His slave and Messenger.
We have already clarified in fatwa 349957 that throwing Zamzam water in drains and the like is disliked because Zamzam water is respected and worthy of reverence.
There is no difference between the drains in Al-Masjid Al-Haraam (in Makkah) and in other places because the reason for which it is disliked is also present in the drains of Al-Masjid Al-Haraam.
Therefore, it is better to avoid this, and if there is a need to pour out Zamzam water (i.e. to get rid of it), then it should be poured out in a pure place (where it is not exposed to disrespect).
