Question
In Islam we can perform umrah for the deceased, but can we perform umrah for any one, or should we perform just for our mahrams? May Allah guide us to the right path.
Answer
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
It is not a condition when performing Hajj or Umrah on behalf of someone that the doer must be a relative of that person. Any person who has already performed Hajj and Umrah for himself can perform it on behalf of any other person, even if that person is not his/her relative. Al-Ramli said in his book Nihayet Al Muhtaj: "And the alien can perform Hajj on behalf of a dead person (who is not his/her relative).
