Marriage is given priority over Hajj in some cases

Question

I am perplexed whether to help my mother perform Hajj or get myself married. I have an amount of money enough for only one of these two purposes. While I really wish to send my mother to Hajj, I also feel a dire need to marry? What should I do?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

You should know that when one longs for marriage and is afraid to commit zina (unlawful sexual intercourse), it is obligatory for him to get married if he can afford it. As for your mother's Hajj, you can delay it until you have the ability to do it. Then, if you can perform Hajj for yourself and your mother, it is good. If you can do Hajj for yourself only, you have to do it, because Hajj is obligatory for you in the first place. Nonetheless, your mother is not obligated to go to Hajj as long as she is financially unable to do.

Allaah Knows best.
