Eldest Son Who Supports the Family Wants to Go for Hajj

Question

Can I go for Hajj? I am the eldest son in the family and have three younger sisters. In addition, the family depends on my income, the sole support for the family.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

If you have money that is sufficient for all the expenses of Hajj, then you are obliged to perform it. Know that the money for Hajj is what you have remaining after satisfying your needs such as housing, clothing, food and the like, and the needs of those you are responsible for.

Therefore, if you do not have surplus money after spending on those who are under your responsibility, then the Hajj is no longer obligatory upon you.

If you have surplus money after meeting the needs of those you have to support, then you have to perform Hajj.

Know that Allah will surely grant you a good reward for taking care of your sisters and mother. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Whoever is put to trial by these daughters and treats them generously, then these daughters will act as a shield for him from Hellfire.” [Al-Bukhari]

Allah knows best.
