Marrying a woman who denies the attributes of Allaah

Question

Is it permissible for a Muslim to marry an atheist woman who believes in one God but denies all His Attributes?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

The questioner did not specify the religion of that woman who adopts this invalid belief. However, she must be one of three:

1. A Muslim.

2. Neither a Muslim nor a Christian nor a Jew.

3. A Christian or a Jew.

In the first two possibilities, it is impermissible at all to marry such a woman. If she is a Muslim, she is an apostate according to the consensus of Ahlus-Sunnah Wal-Jamaa‘ah because she denies the Attributes of Allaah which are proved by the Quran and the Sunnah. In Al-Fataawa, Shaykhul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah may Allaah have mercy upon him said, “The first thing introduced by the Jahmiyyah is claiming that the Quran is created and negating the Attributes of Allaah. The Taabi‘in during that time and their successors denied this and considered the person who claims this an apostate.

If she is a polytheist, neither Christian nor Jewish, it is unlawful to marry her. Allaah The Almighty Says (what mean): {And do not marry female polytheists (Those who associate others with Allaah) until they believe.} [Quran 2: 221]

If she is Christian or Jewish, there are some details in this respect. If she follows her distorted religion, it is permissible to marry her. That is because Allaah Mentioned many forms of their distortion, such as attributing a son to Allaah and claiming that Allaah Is a third of three. Exalted Is Allaah and High above what they say by great sublimity.

If she does not follow her distorted religion, it is impermissible to marry her because she is an apostate. As such, she is a polytheist and the ruling of marrying an apostate is mentioned above.

Allaah Knows best.
